We’ve been so focused on the Montney (Canadian) and Permian (US) studies in our R&D Center for the last 6 months, but finally have had the chance to take a look at Eagle Ford crude oil samples. Our CoreSurf-6 (Economical premium oil recovery surfactant) and TNE-1 (Non-emulsifier) have shown excellent performance in early tests including demulsification and interfacial tension reduction. Based in Houston, Tiffany joins us as our Technical Account Manager and brings with her 12 years of industry experience, chiefly in Completions. Are you using local Texas sand? You aren’t alone! The shale boom has put massive pressure on sand supply for fracturing treatments. Rail bottlenecks experienced when shipping the typical Northern White sand from Wisconsin to Texas has led operators to explore using local “in-basin” sand sources now more than ever. It is estimated that as much as 50% of the sand used for fracturing in West Texas will be sourced locally next year as opposed to railing sand across the continent.

A common misperception is that all the polymers used in well stimulation will lead to formation damage. There is countless data showing that guar and guar derivatives degrade to insoluble and permeability blocking residue. As the industry shifts almost exclusively to using polymers based on polyacrylamide and related copolymers, the concern of formation damage returns, especially when concentrations are elevated substantially to build viscosity with HVFR’s. Fortunately, lab testing shows that some of these polymers are notably cleaner than guar polymers and can yield closer to 100% regained permeability (Sometimes even higher than 100%), especially with the use of breakers.

We’re excited about our promising oil recovery results with Wolfcamp crude and core using our CoreSurf line of surfactants. The Chemterra R&D team has recently switched focus away from the extensively studied Canadian shale plays to studying the effect of our surfactant line in the prolific US shales such as those in the Permian. Recently we’ve discovered our CoreSurf-6 is yielding very encouraging results with Permian core and fluids as shown in our most recent oil recovery tests on Wolfcamp samples. We’re excited to further demonstrate enhanced performance at a great price point as we continue to study more samples from the Midland and Delaware Basins with more types of testing.
The right stimulation surfactant can deliver greater well performance, and surfactant performance should be evaluated under simulated wellbore conditions. The Amott Cell Spontaneous Imbibition test achieves this by measuring the oil displacement of crude oil through water imbibition. See the video below for a demonstration of Amott Cell testing. With the addition of our new Panda cams, we can now supervise our lab tests remotely when our team of scientists cannot be there in person. ChemTerra’s lab testing often requires round-the-clock monitoring to ensure accurate test results and our team of Panda cams can both record the test and provide a live stream so the rest of the team can monitor results while performing other tests.
